The car is driving very nicely and no worries. With that said, I have continued to think about how the car is meeting performance expectations with all the work that has been done and feedback provided by a variety of sources. There are a lot of clues that I was working back and forth and decided to go down to DB Performance and talk things over with Danny.

The primary clue was that the boost the car was making just didn't match expected HP and TQ on any comparable (as close as I could find) 4.6 mod motor. The boost curve itself was not matching and while belt slip might be part of it, did not seem like all of it.

Part of this puzzle is that I am probably Danny's most vexing customer

I do listen to his input, but I am not afraid to tell him I want to go a certain way or use a certain part. He is willing to go along with this because I never bitch when I **** up and I always pay him, LOL.

Anyway, I was running over my concerns and he pulled up my dyno chart so we could look it over. I asked him if he could overlay any comparable 3V charts. He overlayed a stock cam and comp stage 2 cam 2.6 kenne bell.

I about ****ing fell over.

The problem, with absolutely no hard feelings to anyone, is that Crownaviation (1st buyer of a SPEC R who was killed in a car accident) never got a chance to make it to the dyno. The cam he had L&M design and build to aid streetability worked exactly as designed, it limited the bottom end TQ. I personally think Crown would have gone with another cam once he found out how badly this cam hurt TQ and HP. I ordered the same cam as my salute to Crown, no regret.

So, based on what Danny and I thought was the issue, Danny gave the owner of Bullet cams a call. He basically confirmed our suspicions and based off specs on my car he is building a set of cams that should perform quite a bit better, I hope.

So, waiting for cams to be built and Jason is fabbing up the pulley mounts so I can improve belt tension. When I have all the parts in hand, will try and slot into Danny's schedule and see what happens.

The red line is the stock cam 3V. The black line is the COMP stage 2 3V and the blue line all the way to 7,000 + RPM is mine (the worst performing).

Under the knife. Everything looked good, but the chain guides looked a little distorted, so upgrading to MMR race guides. Hopefully have it buttoned back up by the end of next week, if parts show up.

Badly underestimated how Xmas would affect parts coming in. MMR race guides finally came in and now she can be assembled.

Car is buttoned back up and idles fine on the current tune. Danny actually thinks it idles better than on the old cam. Now Danny and LITO schedules need to sync up next week hopefully since Danny is gone the week after that.

The mechanic who did most of the DOB install moved on, so John who did the turbo work did this work. One of the dash 20 fittings developed a small leak, he had to buy a new wrench, LOL.

Belt wrap improved also.

Lookin' good man! I don't think you could get that belt to wrap any more now lol And is that a 12 rib belt now?

Hello!

Still 10 rib, I do have a slightly bigger idler pulley, but it had a smaller diameter post, so went with the one that would be less likely to be torqued to the side.

On a side note, tech thought the MMR chain guides reduced chain play significantly better than the plastic guides. The plastic guides were definitely deforming, so good to have addressed it I think.

Cool, I bet they would work even better if you removed the MMR name off the front of them haha

I hear you, LOL. Individual parts you can inspect are fairly safe I think. There are a few other providers, but Danny just doesn't do much business with them.

Yea I get your philosophy, it's just like buying tools from Harbor Freight lol. I'm just messin' with you, heck I might even order a set of those next time I have my motor apart.

Yea I get your philosophy, it's just like buying tools from Harbor Freight, as long as it's a simple hand tool that doesn't do anything critical it's probably okay lol. I'm just messin' with you, heck I might even order a set of those next time I have my motor apart.

Well, GT500 member on here doing a sweet turbo upgrade motivated me to share what I am up to with my 3V 4.6 monster! :D

I swear if I hear another vendor ask me why I don't just Coyote swap it!.....

First thing is that the 3.4 Whipple is very nice and the car is a hoot to drive, the setup just didn't meet a long held goal of mine to own a legit 1,000 RWHP car. It maxed out in the mid 900 range and I was not willing to push the blower. Making a 30G booboo on the dyno, or strip, just did not hold any interest for me. So, is my goal silly? maybe, but as anyone knows who has tried, it is not such an easy thing to do and have it be reliable and safe at the same time.

So, what to do, still had my turbo kit that made low 700 HP. I had a kick ass DOB SPEC R intercooler with stellar IAT's. Decided to take a page from the GT500 guys and have a hat built. HA! it took a month to get anyone to talk to me, everyone is busy beyond busy, Hogan got caught up on its build requests and contacted me. So Danny is talking to them about using my extra blower mount plate, which is unique to my manifold to build me a hat like below.

Earlier, I had been watching the facebook marketplace and unbelievably scored a set of barely used stage 3 Bullet 3V turbo cams.

20181019_132006_resized.jpg

Next step was to decide what turbo to use. Decided I wasn't gonna screw around and get a good one that would hit my goal with some room. Went with the Bullseye 80 NLX V-Band 1.40 A/R 96x88

NLX_3-2T.jpg

Got that bad boy bought and paid for and on the way. Will send the hotside to Swaintech for coating when it gets in.

This next piece of the puzzle I have really been wrestling with, it is a big hit to the wallet, but has so many useful features regarding control, tuning and engine protection, that I feel am almost compelled to make the investment.

Of course now, my car is really a track freak and I need to purchase a trailer. Of course there are tons of fiddly bits to be bought including a custom radiator so I can fit that turbo into the driver side of car to blow into the hat. Also should bite the bullet and upgrade the 6 point to a 10 point or even 8.50 certified.

So with wallet hemorrhaging certain, will probably accumulate parts this winter and summer and go for assembly the following winter.

Anyway, "The Accidental Build" the 4.6 3V that can, carries on!

Well. Bullseye had a little snafu in that they sent a turbo with all the right specs, except it was a 83 instead of an 80. After talking it over with them, decided to keep it and see what happens.
