Lets talk home surveilance systems

I am building a new house and am looking for recommendations on a new home surveillance system.

I currently have a couple year old Q-See eight cam system but I want better resolution. My cams are 960h, and they don't give me the clarity I want, especially at night. Also, Q-See won't update the mobile apps for remote viewing, so the iPad app no longer works at all, and the iPhone app leaves a lot to be desired. I also have to constantly unplug the cameras from the power supply as the IR filters gets stuck on. I probably won't be going with a Q-See system in the new house.

My new house is about 3200 sqft and I will need at least nine cameras to get the coverage I want. The new house is just framed right now and I will be pre-wiring it next weekend (got it cleared with the builder) with copper Ethernet cable to the locations I want the cams, so install should be a breeze.

I will definitely want an HD system.

What systems are you guys using? I'm not looking for a cloud-based system; I want a complete, wired, stand alone system. I'm not gonna pay a company to store my footage.

I will be taking the 4TB HDD out of my current DVR and putting it into the new DVR, so HDD size doesn't really matter to me.

I'd at least like to have the clarity to identify faces in my driveway at night and maybe read license plates. My neighbor's car was recently broken into at 3am, and while I was able to see the incident on camera, I couldn't discern any identifiable features of the thief.

Yeah, wireless systems never interested me as you still have to run wire for power to the cams. Wireless cams can also be hacked and have the signals intercepted.

While running the wires through the walls, floors, and attic of my current house was a pain (and expensive as I had someone do it for me), it was the right way to do it. I'm really glad that the builder is letting me pre-wire the new house. It's gonna be so much easier.

I've got one as well. I have yet to figure out a way to download and review the footage and images his eyes capture. He is pretty good at outdoor motion detection though. God forbid a leaf blow down the street

Are you willing to share more info on your setup? Power, night-time video quality, etc. I’m definitely impressed with the resolution of the daytime images.

I'm going through this as well; daustin's right, gotta run a wire for power; I run wires and go with POE cameras. Right now looking at a POE Network Video Recorder to centrally connect all my cameras. At this time I'm using one camera (chinese made; good quality cam; useless software) and a demo version of Blue Iris software. Cam is a GW Security dome camera; 1520P 4MP with night vision. All other GW cameras I've tried (3 others) the vid stream stops and starts; throwing 'dead cam' codes in the BI SW.

I recommend the first GW S. cam; none of the others.

If I didn't typically overthink everything; I'd be intrigued by this:

I wouldn't go with less than 4MP cameras myself^^

Here's my setup, the camera's a 5MP...

Night vision; not sure what the lines are, or the haze on the top right; probably my camera.

Not a good image for the night shot, you can actually see to the end of the walkway. The other GW cameras (darn that they didn't work) should get the driveway.

Looking over your selection. I'd go with a POE NVR, as written; only have 2 points af failure; the camera or NVR. And both are easily accessible. It can also be argued that the CAT wire is also, but problems with wire are almost always at the ends.

Looks like the one you've selected uses analog coax; a dead end, although it comes with the wire. BNC terminations are more tricky (and arcane) than UTP. UTP with RJ-45EZ connections almost do themselves, and you won't have bunches of coiled wire everywhere.

I have a Hikvision 4MP setup hooked up to a 1TB NVR. Cost around $1000-1200 installed from a good friend of mine who runs an It company. All POE cameras. He says they are the best of the chinese made cameras

Software can sometimes be glitchy, but it does work. Mobile as well as desktop server

Nightvision is very poor, as is all the camera under 300-500 I bet. With some LED spotlights however, the quality is very good

Yep. Fully fenced and gated on 5.5 acres with roaming outdoor dogs. If someone forces their way their way past our gate/fence, they better be prepared for the consequences.

The only place I wish we had a camera was at our front gate. Other than that, we don't need any.

Not sure what your budget is but I have installed three of these systems and REALLY like them, and they have free cloud based software that you can load on your phone, tablet, pc, I-Pad, etc. can monitor from anywhere with internet. (FLIR MPX 3100 Series 8-Channel DVR with 2TB HDD and 8 Dome Cameras) Google: B and H photo , pretty good place to deal with and good support if you need it. These are not the only thing out there, I've used many, these are just my more recent installs.
Works well, no static IP required, we use them for monitoring grain elevators and truck lines in agriculture environment. And they are all POE (power over eithernet) so only one wire needed to each camera and the wire is pretty cheap. I have one with a 400' run that is working fine, but I don't recommend going that far with a single run, you can do 300' all day long. Avoid wireless if at all possible, run wire, it will last forever and always be up, just leave an extra foot or two in the wall cavity, gives you room to change later if needed. Wire is cheap, good stuff is 100 bucks for 1000' roll. I do installs for the company I work for to get some time away from my desk and some fresh air, so I'm pretty unbiased and buy what suits us, I'm not a reseller or dedicated installer, but, I do understand the equipment and terms. If you have any questions from someone not trying to sell you anything ask away.
