NYC is awesome, idc what anyone says. There's always so much going on but I've always had a great time there. Some things may be overwhelming for many. For example, Times Square. You're talking about hoards of people from all over the globe, shoulder to shoulder, especially around the eastern sidewalk by McDonald's. Similar to the strip in Vegas, where you got people in Pokemon costumes and annoying rappers trying to sell you mixtapes. But then you could always take pics with the topless hotties walking around. I'd say the best time to go is at night or twilight hours. Great for taking pictures of all the lights and buildings, as well as the red steps.
The Empire State building is pretty cool but I prefer the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) and the Top of the 1 World TC over that. It gives a great view of the city and if you're gonna check out the 9/11 memorial, it's right there. There's also loads of things to do at Central Park. I enjoy taking pics of popular movie spots. Bow Bridge, Bethesda Fountain, Strawberry Fields, as well as the museum from Night of the Museum. You could also walk or bike the Brooklyn Bridge, hangout at Brooklyn Bridge Park (great shots of the city), Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, Washington Square Park, Grand Central Station, Wall Street (pics of the Merrill bull which apparently has a statue of a little girl in front now), broadway shows, etc. Little Italy and Chinatown are also pretty cool. Coney Island is alright but kinda overrated imo.
There's also Lombardi's Pizza (the 1st pizzeria in the US) and I like the Halal Guys. They're a little food cart that serves some good Middle-Eastern food and they usually have a long line but it moves quickly. That and if you're into any soul food, there's Sylvia's out in Harlem.
I'm sure you won't be able to do all this in a day but atleast you could make your picks based on your interests.

Yes you do care otherwise you wouldn't have given your opinion to counter the negative opinion and it's fine to enjoy it. Maybe for someone who goes to NYC once in halley's comet it's great but it grows old fast. Traffic, liberals, morons, high prices, pakistani taxi drivers, that god awful NY/Italian accent, etc.., wears thin on a man in a hurry. Pizza? Just like Philly, the food or bg name restaurant a big city is known for is usually more of a myth than anything of substance to the point where you can get better else where. I say that as a kid who had his first martini at 16 (maybe even 15) at Windows On The World back in '92 and ate at some famous, over priced places in Manhattan.

If you like planes the Intrepid is on the west side and next to it is the Circle Line(trip around manhattan and the Statue of Liberty). South of there is the WTC, the museum of natural history and the planetarium are right by Central Park. Look at a map, try to see stuff in the same area,parking is a pain.

Brad, I thought so too until I went to NY for the first time in 2000 for business. We decided to tour the Empire State Building for nostalgic reasons instead of the World Trade Towers - who knew.

Meh, no I don't. The reason I said that was the last post I saw before I started my reply was the op's saying he was surprised there was so much hate. My thing is I've come to expect the gun-toting, super-conservative opinions all too much on this site. I think it's all too common but that's cool. Though, I agree that it all can grow old fast. I could imagine that happening especially for the locals there but when you come from a city where people always say there's nothing to do here, a city like NY becomes a great alternative.
Well shit, you may have just ruined my NYC trip. Didn't know about The Intrepid...last year I went down to DC (first time going) and I spent my entire time there in the Air and Space Museum.
Believe me, there isn't any shame in caring.
The only real advice I'd give to someone going who wants to have a decent time is not to go as a tourist. I learned that valuable lesson after my first time in the city. Tourists get pushed around and treated as if they have the word "schmuck" written on their forehead.

There is a wax museum across the street from the Alamo. It was cool for about 5 minutes.
Funny, I played GTA V last night and got my fill of LA.... and bashing skulls etc
Just got back last night. If I was on a day trip, hit Trump tower, it's amazing inside. Talk to the NYPD outside, the counter terrorism guys and secret service are everywhere, we talked about long range shooting. I enjoyed the river cruise that leaves right beside the Intrepid. It's 90 min and goes right to the Statue of Liberty. You have to hit the WTC it's a must. For food, Cafe Napoli in Little Italy was great, 2 doors down is Caffe Palermo for fresh cannolis. Try to get to the Top of the Roc as it gets dark. That will give you sunset over the city, bonus if you mill around until completely dark, it's spectacular.
If you have time I would walk through Times Square just to experience it, don't stay. If the Mrs. or you like to seriously shop, check out 5th ave but be prepared to pay. A guy tried to fit me for a $900 pair of Allen Edmonds boots, he obviously misjudged me!
