WTF is an Aviator motor?

It's like the little brother to the Navigator. Made in 03-04. Kind of like a "Lincoln Explorer". You could get an explorer with a 2V motor, but the Aviator came with the 4V motor.

4.6 DOHC aluminum high compression motor. Same long block as a mercury marauder or a mach 1.

Since not too many people know about this junkyard treasure, you can get yourself a perfectly good DOHC motor for CHEAP. Sure, it's not forged, but for how cheap you can get these motors, you can install a forged rotating assembly, perhaps even a stroker crank too for less than the price of rebuilding a trashed 4.6.

You guys probably already know this but here goes, The intake cams in the 03/04 Cobra, Mach1, Aviator and Marauder heads are actually 99-04 DOHC Navigator intake cams.

I believe that is why they fill cylinders so well at the lower RPMs, that 5.4 has a huge stroke and the cams help big ports fill cylinders at lower RPMs.

I would love to some day put some 98 intakes in my car, but most likely not unless something breaks.:nonono:

Hi...can anyone tell me what motor mount they used when swapping a lincoln aviator motor into a 1999-2004 new edge body? The lincoln aviator motor came from a 2005 and is being installed into a 2000 gt.

I know this port is very old, but I have an 01 cobra, with a bad bottom end. Can I use a aviator short block and swap the heads and intake from my cobra, or do I need amy thing specific when I'm looking??

Yes. Just completed this swap. I have 99 Cobra that had a hole in the block from a broken rod. Bought 04 Aviator engine from junkyard. As previously stated, you will have to strip the aviator engine. I didn't swap heads, Aviator heads are suppose to be better. Use your 01 oil pump pickup and oil pan, I replaced the oil pump which came with a new pickup. Use the 01 timing cover, intake with piping under intake and the 01 cam covers. You will have to purchase a 6 bolt 11" flywheel, stock or aftermarket. The passenger side heater coil piping is different. You will have to knock out the freeze plug and install the heater pipe. Overall not difficult. Not sure of your budget but finding a Aviator engine may not be easy. You can get them from LKQ direct for $1300 to $1800 with mileage varying from 110k to 180k+. This engine is in high demand and most Aviator's will have high miles. I got lucky and pulled mine from LKQ pick a part, engine has 211k miles for $400. This is a budget build. Engine is running great so far. Good luck.

I think the Navigator used a 5.4. The Aviator was the 4.6. A quick search showed the Aviator at 302hp. About The same as a Mach. I would imagine the Aviator intake had something to do with the power difference.

IMO unless your stock engine is having issues there's no reason to swap.

I assume you spun a bearing from low oil? If so have your heads checked out before reusing them. Pretty good chance you may have some burnt valves too.

Yes low oil, spun rod bearing. What if I used a 97, 98 mark 8 short block? And used my hEads (if they are still good) and swap intake, is that a better set up for the money?

The Mark shortblock uses a 6 bolt crank. So you'll need another flywheel. The heads should bolt on though.

Had anyone tried, the opposite? I have an aviator and would like to run the mach 1 or cobra style intake. I know it will bolt to my heads but will it cause any adverse effects by unplugging the variable butterflies?

No problems with what? So I should be able to just bolt on a mach1 intake and it won't have any adverse effects even if I have to leave the butterfly thing unplugged?

If it's in an aviator, the runner control actuator code would probe be triggered so it would have to be shut off. There will be no problems if it's not in an aviator.

Yes that's what I would be referring too. Does any one know if that sort of thing is or could be covered in a custom tune, if that's the case i'll just hold putt till the motor blows and then put the blower on. Because I'm not going to see that much of a gain. Just thought since I don't really tow that I'd make it more of a sport truck than a tow vehicle and the cobra intake was a first thought.

So in your opinion is it worth changing to the cobra/mach1 and getting a tone, or just waiting to do like an Eaton swap then get the tune, I have no idea what a tune runs but at 3-500 for the intake and my time. Don't know if it's worth it

If the plan is to do an Eaton swap I'd wait. I don't know if the intake swap will be worth any power.
