So I had a sit down with my new boss and was told to hold back my productivity because the people in my department are having low self esteem issues do to how much I've changed the companies ideals and expectations.

As an owner or worker have you ever heard the BS? I hate to admit but I straight up laughed when he said that. Is he scared that I'm over qualified and think I'm after his job?

It could be any number of things. Are you union? Are you qualified to be in your boss' position? I was in kind of the opposite situation. I was told it was not pulling my own weight, so I pulled the numbers from the record and show them that I was actually the top performer in the shop. Shit hit the fan when I did that. My boss wanted me out and he was feeding the higher-ups a bunch of shit to trying get me out it all blew up in his face when I did that. What laws does your state have as far as recording people? this is one of those times that sounds like it would be good to record a conversation like that and just put it away until something big goes down. Check your states wire tapping laws before you do that. Here in Texas, only one person present in the room must be informed that the recording is taking place, and that person can be you, the one actually recording.

But to be honest I don't want his job, I'm a dedicated worker and strive at doing my all. I'm just sitting here thinking things over a beer wondering why I'm being told by one boss I'm a franchise player and the other tells me to hold back. I'm feeling conflicted.

A Company has a "culture" that has developed, or, has been allowed to develop over a long period of time. Unless you were hired to change the culture or to turn around a failing enterprise, accept it or leave. To do otherwise is an invitation to unhappiness and/or failure. Now, this is not to say that the culture now in place is perfect or even a good one, just that somethings are not your job.

I heard that nonsense once in high school. Can't believe you were told this in a professional setting.

Sounds like he's got some job security issues and see you as his replacement. I wouldn't hold back and keep doing what you''re doing. How others feel isn't your problem.

If your boss was an actual leader and motivator he would try to bring the rest of the team up to your level not you down.

Keep doing what you've been doing op. Your boss is nothing more than a mere speed bump in your career. No one ever became great by holding back. Follow your own path not the one he's trying to lay before you.

Work as hard as you want, do all you can, but don't be an asshole. Your current direct boss is probably in fear for his job. Probably had it easy the last few years, everybody that works for him is probably a dim bulb, and he tells his boss on a routine basis how he "provided guidance" to his folks.

The "dont be an asshole" bit, though, that's on you. It's hard, especially if you are a bright bulb in a dark background of chair-warming time-clock cruisers. Still, you never know what is going to happen in a year, much less five or ten, so, be the guy everybody goes to for help and makes them feel better, not the "asshole of last resort."

OK, you hired into a situation where mediocre is the norm. People come in, shuffle through the day and go home. Manager comes in and gets a carefree day with no discipline problems to get HR on his back. When running at 20%, it is easy to realize gains year over year without increasing real effort.
Now you come in. Manager feels threatened because you are showing what the staff should be doing, and questions are being raised as to why he has failed to get this performance out of all of his people.
Do your job to the best of your ability.
Be respectful to your supervisor, but do not lower your standards.
Give it some time, but DO NOT go over your supervisors head until you are approached by his boss.

About as bad as where I work where people are forced into certain performance zones. Each department only has a certain number of people they can make 3, 4, or 5. They have to make people lower zones based on their peers.

People are told "don't try to hard because you are going to wind up a 2 this year no matter what."

If you are a new guy to a tight knit team you are going to get rated lower to meet their quota of lower rated employees over some people who have been there longer or are more popular.
