Great write up!
If I go FI the OPG's is something I had planned on doing, this log is a big help.

Just got through helping my son build a stroker LS......man the Chevy sure seems simple now!

Thanks for taking the time to document everything Blazer.

Is there a need to use a straight edge when installing the pump back onto the crank? I know ls motors your have to check clearances in the gears and get it perfectly centered

great write up. I just did mine, thanks.. one thing I did that aided in getting the oil pickup back on was I used a piece of electric tape about 10 inch's long I poked a hole in the tape with a small screw driver at one end, then I inserted the bolt in the back oil pick up hole (hard one) afterward I push the tape on to the bolt to hold it on the pick up. once I got the bolt started I pulled the tape out and tightened the bolt up. the reason for the tape being long was to ensure I was able to grab it

Nope, just throw them in and go.

Thats a smart idea, someone else mentioned something along those lines.

While this is true for the most part the moduar oil pump can be installed off center, it will cause the gear to click as it is rotated, we generally suggest the pump be installed with the bolts just above hand tight, then rotate the engine 1-2 revolutions, this will center the pu mp and at that point you can tighten it to spec.

I never knew that mark, Ill add that to the main post. Iv'e done a little over 20 of them and always just made sure the logo is on the correct side and made sure they rotate over easy with my fingers.

Yes, there is no way to install the gears wrong in the pump (other than upside down) but the pump when bolted to the engine has quite alot of play due to the bolt hole size. The procedure above is fool proof, most people just slap them on and have no troubles, put the procedure listed above will ensure they are perfectly centered. And we should point out that this procedure should and can be used on a stock oil pump or aftermarket as they can both be bolted on slightly off center.

By rotating the engine without the timing chains aren't you creating an issue with the timing between the crank and cams? Sorry if the question is dumb but this exceeds my general knowledge of these engines.

It would depend on the cams and their position, a set of stock cams can be placed into a position in which the shortblock can be turned 360 degrees without valve contact. When we build longblocks we install the pumps before the heads, this allows us to verify the pump feels correct.

My ac belt setup was completely different. Didn't have the pully up top or a tensior. It goes straight to the crank pully. Anyone know why. It kinda threw me off for a second. Awsome right up though . Following it all the way threw.

I just did my OPG and used this write up and it was very helpful. Like mentioned the oil pickup tube is the hardest part.

I used a Chevy starter shim, bent it as shown in the picture, drilled it out so the bolt head fit through it and held the bolt up with it and started the bolt with the wrench. It worked perfect. Just thought I'd share.
