Anyone seen black "goo" build up on their injectors from E85?

Also if you do drive it again just for curiosity..... maybe ease into it or see if you can tell if its happening around a certain boost pressure point...

So the old motor was still in good working condition and never had any issues?

Battery in factory location?

Yes motor was fine, just to slow. So I built a new one with flat top pistons, ported heads, cams, long tubes etc. Worked OK initially now some weird lean issue.
Yes battery in stock location.

You don't even have to get into boost, just barely get on the gas, very part throttle accelerating. I could probably get out run by a pruis because of how gentle I have to be on the gas to keep from going lean.

OK after searching around I now remember why I'm 40 micron. That's as small as they do in stainless steel. The only filters I find that are 10 micron are cellulose (paper). A google search finds endless results of them dissolving, gumming up or simply falling apart with long term usage in E85. That's why I run a stainless steel filter and live with 40 micron.

Still seems like it has to be a fuel issue IMO. I wonder if at some point you might have to bite the bullet and try a new set of injectors.

Fore and Lethal sells 10 micron stainless filters. I am running the Fore one myself. But ID is now recommending either Microglass or Cellulose with their injectors. FYI

I also was running a cellulose 10 micron paper filter in my 04 and is still running a cellulose 10 micron paper filter to this day. Never once had an issue since 2009. Once the filter was in there with both E85 and gasoline for 2 years! No issues ever. So paper works fine.

Seems like now with ID's recommendations, the microglass might be the way to go.

Before I'd go this route I'd at least ship id1000 injectors back to manufacturer and let them test them.

Edit: well crap I have just seen Kevin's post. I have a new fore stainless filter, guess that will be for sale! How often should these filters be replaced?

I'll prolly change my stock filter out every 1-2 years just to be safe. Cornfed for almost a year now with no issues, just sat 2-1/2 months in the garage on 1/3 tank and fired right up.

I already pulled the injectors and took them to a shop where they were cleaned and tested on a flow bench. If you're not familiar they hook them up to a pressurized cleaning solution and hookup the electrical to pulse them and both clean them and test their flow rates and verify they are working. They spray into test tubes with milliliter graduations and verify flow capacity over X period of time. My injectors are confirmed working.

Are you sure about that? I've looked at Fore's website and it doesn't say what their stainless steel filters are down to but it does specifically say this.

"Injector Dynamics recommends finer filtration provided by our cellulose and
microglass SSD elements"

So if ID is saying we need 10 micron and they say I need to use either cellulose or microglass to get it then their stainless steel is not 10 micron. I will call Fore to be sure though.

I also was running a cellulose 10 micron paper filter in my 04 and is still running a cellulose 10 micron paper filter to this day. Never once had an issue since 2009. Once the filter was in there with both E85 and gasoline for 2 years! No issues ever. So paper works fine.

I've seen a few people post success like you but way more people post the opposite. Gumming up, filter elements coming apart etc. Not sure if it's different additives around different parts of the country or what the deal is.

Seems like now with ID's recommendations, the microglass might be the way to go.

I've read that ID link before and notice at the bottom how it says all 10 micron stainless steel elements they tested do not filter anything smaller than 25 micron. Their chart shows a fair amount of filters tested too but they blur out the names on the brands / suppliers so we don't know who's filters. It does say ALL tested though, not just some.

Before I'd go this route I'd at least ship id1000 injectors back to manufacturer and let them test them.

Already had them flow bench tested and cleaned. They are verified working.

OK after looking a little harder I did find this on Fore's website. So the microglass would be the way to go. They say right there stainless steel absolute filtration is 26 micron which was ID's findings as well.

Here is the aero microglass long filter. Part # 12639

I am getting ready to put the Marauder on the E85 and hoping I never have this goo problem. Cause like you I have the crusher intake. LOL

how ironic, I just swapped out the fuel filter yesterday and was texting Kevin the pics. It looked like it was brand new after 14 months (just like the other 4 times I've changed it).

I don't understand what goes on with E85 around the country...it appears to be a crap shoot what quality is being refined. Is it possible these are other "additives" baked in to combat cold starts in cold weather areas? Or....it's not a refining quality issue something else is going wrong....like contamination between distribution and the stations/underground tanks themselves....whatever the case...some people are getting very unlucky deciding to pump at that station. I know here in Texas it seems most have very good results.

The Fore glass filter is much cheaper so I'll probably go that route. They are interchangeable. I opened up a Fore filter and my Aeromotive and the filter elements are identical and you can interchange them.

That's nice you have no issues with it. Did you by chance look inside the old filter? From what I've read it's the inside of the filter, the side that faces the injectors after fuel has passed through it, that gets all gummy and nasty first.

BTW I compared the Fore "10" micron stainless steel element with my Aeromotive 40 micron today and side by side you can visually see how much finer the weave is on the Fore unit so it'll definitely trap smaller particles than my 40 but only down to around 26 according to Fore's site.

I just ordered a fore microglass one. Kinda expensive, but hopefully worth added insurance.

Just to verify, this is happening on ID1000's? I thought you were running the ID1300's the whole time reading this.

I have ID1000s. Been considering ID1300s or more but going to try and just bump up my base fuel pressure first and see if that gets me by. Need to get the car running properly again first.

No, it's whistle clean. Like I just unwrapped it from the package. There's no residue of any sort inside or out. Besides a couple small pebbles of sediment on the outside, it looks and feels brand new

Very cool. I was tempted to just get a 10 micron cellulose element but the glass ones are so cheap I just got that. I have enough problems with my car right now, no need to invite more and figure out there's something weird with my E85 and the paper filters lol.
