I have been thinking wouldnt it have been great for Ford to go to a 5.8L 351 CI. motor. I love and have owned the new 5.0 and
it is an excellent motor at 420 hp. Why didnt ford pay homage to the older 351 and do a DOHC N/A 351?
Something like 500 hp N/A. It would probably put out a good bit more torque too.....
Just thinking Id like to hear some opinions

Good question. I always figured it was emissions/EPA numbers and the cost of certifying versus the number that would be sold.

I for one wish they made one from factory. Something about a Boss 351 that everyone loves. Ford should have made one instead of the 6.2. If only you could de-stroke it and fit some coyote heads.

I think someone is making a 351 stroker block already though not sure who though - could be Livernios or somebody.

In my mind I am picturing the 13-14 GT500 motor minus the blower. I think it would make a great motor for the gt

I for one would like to know why no NA 5.4L in 2011. They were already making the aluminum 5.4 for the Gt500 so it seems to me that it would be cheaper to make a NA 5.4. The extra R&D to make the 5.0 seems like it would end up costing more money. A DOHC NA 11.1 compression 5.4 with Ti-VCT would have been killer. I think marketing might have had something to do with resurrecting the 5.0 in spite of the extra cost.

I wonder what the weight difference would have been too. You gotta remember they are going for lighter cars, that are better balanced for tracking.

The Coyote is physically shorter and narrower than the 4.6 DOHC, can't imagine how much bigger a 5.4 DOHC would be than the 5.0.

I think the 5.0 is about 80lbs less than the 5.4s out of the navigators as well.

Well, I think if you subtracted 100lbs from the 2011 GT500 curb weight you would have a pretty good idea of what a brembo premium GT would have weighed with the larger 5.4-5.8 NA engines. Would it be heavier than the 5.0 yes but I think it would have had around another 30HP and 40TQ for a 5.4 and way more than that for a 5.8. I think most would agree that it would have been a welcome tradeoff. Oh well. What could have been right?
