Why do the CAI BEFORE the TB? flow numbers...

Question for the tuning gurus:

According to internet wisdom, the 13/14 GT500 intake parts flow as follows:

Stock Resonator - 1385 cfm
Stock TB - 1085 cfm
Stock air filter - 1457 cfm.

So - why do folks go for the CAI first? Seems that the TB should be the first mod for higher performance.

As I understand it, the 65 mm Ford Racing TB flows about 1517 cfm (from memory, sorry if I'm off).

I "get" that once you add the TB, the other parts become restrictive, but do you really need the flow from a 123mm CAI vs a FRPP res delete and a filter for similar gains?

Has anyone done just the TB and left the stock parts on (with a tune)? (also has the benefit of looking stock for CA visual inspection).

AS ALWAYS, Thanks for any insight...

I think most do the TB, CAI and tune @ the same time on the 13/14's. I do recall a thread a while back where the op swapped to the FRPP twin 65 and a res delete and picked up almost 50 rwhp w/ no tune.

You can easily swap a FRPP twin 65MM TB on a 13/14 Shelby with your factory tune and pick up 20+whp. But most people do a CAI/T/B/pulley and tune for there first round of mods. It depends on what you're going for with your personal car.

Don't take this as a attack against you because it's not, but no way did he gain 50 whp with no tune adjustment from just the 65 and a res (that doesn't do much of anything). Really poor dyno operation was what that was. Tune, intake, 65, sure.

Go with the 65 if you want the best drivability. Go with the mono or something bigger (L&M 72, VMP 67, even XBA) if you want the most power

I did a dyno tune, VMP TB, and CAI and picked up 55 rwhp so picking up 50 with no tune makes no sense.

Wasn't my thread just posting what I read, it may not have been 50 rwhp but it was a surprising gain. It may have been a favorable dyno and weather conditions.

I have a res delete and airaid filter. Added a CJ 65 TB and the car did not drive as well during gradual acceleration. It didn't throw any codes, but I noticed it wasn't as smooth. Put stock back on and driveability was better. Just my experience.

Did you go through the adaptive re-learn process?
