I just bought this car 4 months ago. Currently it has 5w20 Valvoline full synthetic for oil and an off the shelf oil filter. My car has 83,000 miles plus on it! Please assist as I want the best for my Cobra! I live in Missouri where the weather gets hot and humid during the summer and I try not to drive her in the cold weather. Sometimes though it is unavoidable. What do you guys recommend for a great oil and oil filter???

I use Mobil 1 in my DDs, Royal Purple in my Cobra. But realistically, it's whatever makes you happy at that price point.

I run 7qts of German castrol and fl820 filter in my 01 cobra
Fl820 filter for sure. Stay away from fram filters.
Motor oil.... I'd not run 5w20, I run rotella T6 in everything I own. (5w40) Even the lawnmower

I run my car pretty much daily. Usually in the afternoon. Cant keep my hands off of it. Love to here the exhaust roar. FL820 is this a Ford filter?? The weight that pennzoil book recommends at walmart is 5w30. My owners manual does not say or cover my engine. Was told to check the oil cap but, my oil cap was changed to aftermarket Cobra symbol. HMMM

Usually taking the engine up to 3000 rpm before I shift. Other than that nice and easy until warmed up shift at 2000 rpm during daily driving! Only took it up to 6500 once when I was in competition with someone!
So you're pretty easy on the car. How much do you want to spend and how much protection do you want? Interested in extended drain intervals?

Even though most synthetic oils are good to around 7500 miles, I change mine at 5000. Just my precaution as I am used to changing every 3000 with standard oil. As for owners manual it does not cover the 4.6 DOHC engine!! I did check!!!

Last question, does the engine consume oil?
Not sure whether or not the engine consumes oil. It was leaking due to previous owner having work done on car in his hometown, and they did not completely tighten the oil filter. It was a turn and a half loose! I am monitoring right now.
Who else has a 99 Cobra, what does the oil cap say? Mine was changed to a Cobra symbol before I bought it!
I run the ford filter , Valvoline 5w30.

I ran 5w30 in it and 10w30 in later life.

I ask because it's not worth using a top grade synthetic on a high mileage engine that leaks or consumes oil. You may also drive this car year round in your state. That being said, if you do drive it year round, you will want a lubricant in the 30 grade range, but with the best cold flowing "0W" prefix. Assuming year round driving and no leaks or consumption makes my choice....
