Does anyone here know anything about remote start systems?

I would like to put a remote start in my mom's 2007 Honda CR-V EX. Unfortunately there is not much information on the honda forums. Most people seem to be paying the dealer $700 to put one in, and the dealers use aftermarket systems because Honda does not make one. Seems to be something about the Honda's that with the remote start installed you still have to restart the vehicle after you get in it. In general though I didn't find much about the different brands of remote start systems to get an idea of who makes a good one. I want something basic. Push a button, car starts. No additional security, two way whatever, smartphone app compatible etc.

If anyone has any experience or knowledge they could share I would appreciate it.

The shop I used to work for charged $199 for the unit and then additional for each bypass you needed, such as the 555U to "kill a key." After the system starts the car, you simple place the key in the ignition and turn to the run position, not the start position. This will allow the key to run the car. There should be a kill switch in the brake pedal so if you step on it without the key in the run position the car will die and you will have to restart.

Pretty much any reputable shop should be able to toss one in for you for well under $700. I am out of the game for a while but our Viper top of the line alarm/remote start system with pager remote was just about $500. Personally, I would just look into the base unit that activates when you hit lock on the factory remote twice. I can't for the life of me remember the unit number but it was pretty much just a factory add on. Two clicks of the lock button on the remote and boom, done. I like the clean look better then the aftermarket remote. Stay away from Best Buy and box stores though. Their product and installs are junk. I personally like DEI.

Easy job on any automatic transmission car.
A lot more difficult on any manual transmission car.

Unless you don't care if it will start while in gear.

Shouldn't cost more than $300.00 installed. Many advertise for a lot less.

I had a member on here install the Python 4206 in my wife's 2010 Milan and we love it and we paid about half of what you listed above.

Also push button starts seem to mistify installers.
I suppose it would depend on the amount of support for the vehicle as well,
Our Kia sorento had one installed it works 50% of the time, kinda a piss off but whatever

That's an installer/equipment issue. A remote start is an independent unit, it is in no way vehicle supported. Really its just a fancy box of relays. Someone did a crappy job on yours.

I would just get a basic remote start. Either a single button system or a full replacement remote with keyless entry. I install a ton of remote starts on a regular basis. You will need the remote start system itself and an immobilizer bypass which will need to be flashed on a computer by an installer with a login. That will be the most difficult part for you to install it yourself.

No more complicated than on an auto. Just different module with different logic.
I've had one on a manual since 1993.

There is a wire connected to the parking brake switch to signal when the parking brake is engaged
There is a wire connected to the interior light switch to signal when the door is open.

When you park the car you leave it running in neutral and engage the parking brake.
You leave it running and push the button on the remote starter.
You will hear the parking light relay click which will flash the parking lights.
The engine will continue running and you will be able to remove the key with the engine running.
Everyone exits the vehicle and all doors are closed.
Once all doors are closed you push the button on the remote and the doors lock and the engine stops.
Since the doors were locked while the engine was running and nobody was in the vehicle there is no wy the car can be put in gear.
If anyone opens the door without first starting the vehicle it will disable the remote start.

Had this installed on my previous manual trans 5.0, cost under $300 and worked like a charm:

I talked to Crutchfield. $200 for a Code Alarm 1 way remote start with Flashlogic interface that I would put in myself. I also went to Best Buy and spoke with the head tech who is also in charge of the bays. Normally I would not let Best Buy work on a car but this guy really knew his shit. In the process of BSing he knocked my price down. Viper remote start/Flashlogic interface and a tilt switch so the car won't start if the hood is open (might save someone's fingers in the future.) $304.95 out the door. He will install it himself rather than have another tech do it. I think I will go this route and maybe just go over his wiring when I get home and make sure it is spiced in/wrapped up properly.
