I'm planning on buying me an older suv to have something to play with on the weekends with my kids. Camping, fishing type of thing. Which vehicle is more rugged/reliable, the bronco or blazer. I'm looking at the 93-96 bronco vs. the 88-90 blazer

Go for the bronco, I've had my 96 for 5 years now and have put over 30k miles on it with no issues. I've had the truck off road plenty of times and its never let me down.

The best year to get out of the 92-96 era is a 96. My truck is a 351 with a MAF, OBD II, the E40D was at its strongest in 1996, it has a roller cam, and of course its the newest/last year made.

I've had a few Broncos myself. I'd def try to get a 5.8 over the 5.0. I've had a '90 Eddie Bauer 5.8, '96 5.0 XLT and a '94 XLT 5.8 which was my favorite. The '94 had a 8" lift with 37x13.5s and 4.56s. 8mpg sucked though.

I miss my bronco. Had an 86, first year for fuel injection and it still got better mpgs than my lightning. :). Super reliable. She got hit by a Chevy 1500 truck and a explorer . I drove away. She was still totalled though. The other two, got towed away. Lol

Thanks Sid, needs some paint work this year as the rust is getting bad on the drivers side after being hammered by the past winter. I also want to try and throw a set of offroad bumpers on it this year to and replace the bent up POS stock rear. At 103k miles it still starts up every time without issue though.

By the way, this truck still has 3.55 open diffs front/rear and I've never been stuck once out on the trail. I think the 35's have saved my ass more times than I could count.

Bronco all the way, cant tear them up!! I would love to get a hold of another 90-96 Bronco or F150 with a 5.8. The front twin traction IFS axle is quite strong for being early IFS. It will handle 35's no problem.

Kinda partial to bronco's too lol. I bought the white with 98k miles on it.....sold it with 174k miles on it and the guy that purchased for his son gave me the third degree test driving because he couldn't believe how good it ran. He kept telling me I had the engine rebuilt, which I hadn't of course. Did help I worked at a ford dealer at the time so I had no problem keeping up with it. At 150k I did a trans service and my service manager said it was the best condition and shifting E4OD he had ever seen lol. Only problem with bronco's is how expesive clean ones are getting. every now and then ill jump on ebay to check them and always find 94-96 ones with avg miles for like 10k bucks AND MORE. Granted they are spotless but some of them are like WOW.

Only problems I had were I had to have the driveshaft rebuilt twice, but it wasn't exactly easy on it so I wasn't upset about. First weekend I got it went wheeling with some buddies. They both had lifted Jeeps....and they both broke something and limped home lol. All I did was dent my oil pan....got stuck in 25in deep mud a few times but I made the trip with no issues.

The Brown one I bought from a dr who had it as his severe winter vehicle. He bought it new and it was special ordered...base model with 351w 4bbl,heavy service front end and rear leafs, factory rubber floor covering and cloth/vinyl seats but with a full headliner. It rode HARD AS HELL but man it was a tank and I took it places it should have gotten stuck but didn't. One of trips I snapped a rear sway bar in half....it was discontinued by ford but I found a dealer 20 miles away that had one. When I called they asked me 3 times was I sure I needed the rear I said yes I broke mine. Was a long pause and then got " how in the hell did you break a REAR sway bar". When I got there to pick it up it had half inch of dust on it as they had ordered it by accident 10yrs earlier. I paid 2800 bucks for it and sold it for 3400 2 years later. All I put on it was a new carb and a wheel/tire package. Which I got the tires for 100 bucks and the wheels for 250.

At the time I was looking I couldn't find a fullsize blazer that did have massive steering issues, leaked coolant, among other things.
