Listed in the MSDS (SDS) as "Highly Refined Mineral Oil" and no reference to NOACK Volality. Seems to me, Pennzoil is trying to use the higher end "Ultra" name to disguise a common group III mid grade engine lubricant.

Pass!

For someone who looks upon UOAs so seriously, and there aren't any yet of this oil,but yet you place judgement upon it? Hmmm...

I understand Amsoil is good, but yet you've seem to have tunnel vision at times.

I think you're reading that incorrectly. The primary base oil appears to be Fischer-Tropsch derived. The Fischer-Tropsch process builds long hydrocarbon chains from simpler hydrocarbons. I research employing small scale F-T reactors to produce diesel fuel from methane a few years ago when natural gas was selling ridiculously low. F-T is a gas-to-liquids process that produces extremely pure products, basically building it one molecule at a time. You don't get much more "synthetic" than that.

Also, the sheet specifically mentions that the "highly refined mineral oil is only present as additive diluent." Essentially, the additives come suspended/dissolved in mineral oil. Farther into the document it mentions that mineral oil makes up less than 5.5% of the final product.

I did just skim over the sheet, as it bypassed specifications that easily reveal base oil choice. IF it's a GTL process, then it will be a product to rival Ultra's purity.

You keep using that term when referring to me, however, you are incorrect. I've given mad props to Pennzoil Ultra API SN in the past, and recommend it as the best off the shelf lubricant you can buy. At first glance of the MSDS, it appeared this was a cheaper formulation using the "Ultra" name to disguise it..

I think the inclusion of the "Platinum" name may be a mistake. I don't see any reference anywhere else on the web about a "Pennzoil Ultra Platinum" formulation.

Is Ultra avaliability at Wal-Mart in the 5 qt jugs improving in anyone's area. I've been able to find it at two different stores, both in WV, in the last 3 months. The most recent one was fairly new stock. I still haven't seen it in SC.

The API SN Ultra has been in both Wal-Marts local to me. The last time I checked which was probably a month or so ago it was still available. It is what I plan on using once it is time for an oil change in my car.

I am/was using the Platinum 5-30 in my 2004 Cobra.

I went to pick up another batch of it, to change my oil recently.....and they (Wally World) did not have the same 'ole Platinum I have been using.

They had the new Platinum PurePlus.

They have not had the Ultra for almost a year now. Maybe I should look at another Wally World around here to see if they have the Ultra.

Regardless, I am now using this PurePlus. I am sure it will be fine.

This same WM also stopped carrying my tried and true FL-820S filters - so I have swapped to the Fram Synthetic version, after much research. They are doubel the price of the FoMoCraft FL820S....which kinda sucks.

As far as I know, Platinum and Ultra are being discontinued, and replaced with Platinum w/PurePlus, and Ultra Platinum w/PurePlus.

PurePlus is the base oil formulation, which Pennzoil says is derived from natural gas, rather than crude.

My thoughts: On paper, the new Ultra Platinum does not look better than the outgoing Ultra. Ultra has a slightly lower NOACK volatility and better HTHS, across the board of viscosities. (10w30 PU 4.8% NOACK vs PUPwPP 5.7%) But we'll have to wait and see some UOAs and trending to determine how it really stacks up to Ultra, which is tried and true and has awesome actual wear number trending and real world shear resistance.

The Platinum w/PurePlus, on the other hand, looks promising. Small example, the new Platinum 10w30 has a NOACK of 4.7% edging out the outgoing Ultra, and beating the new Ultra Platinum... and much much better than the 9.7% of old Platinum (For reference, Amsoil SS 10w30 posts a 5.3% NOACK)

What is bizarre to me is why would Pennzoil formulate oils where the "top of the line" oil Ultra Platinum does not perform as well as their next entry Platinum PP in the NOACK test. Hopefully PQIA can get these new oils tested, their last synthetic test from March 2013 is missing some big names.

I mean, of course there is a lot more to judging the quality of a motor oil than just the NOACK numbers... But, I agree that it is weird to have a mid-range oil score better in any category over the top tier offering from the same manufacturer.

One uneducated guess: perhaps PurePlus base oil's volatility is just inherently worse than traditional Group IV and Vs.

I would think, maybe, the Platinum w/PurePlus is running a base oil mix using the new PurePlus and the old Ultra base oils... Where as the new Ultra Platinum is using a higher percentage of PurePlus? But this is all speculation.

What do you think Unleashed?

I'm, eagerly awaiting PQIA's 3rd party testing. Someone on the inside hinted to me recently.....the new Pennzoil forumation NOACK were not testing great. Lets wait and see.

In a Q&A on bobistheoilguy, Shell/Pennzoil states outright that PurePlus base oils, found in the new Ultra Platinum and Platinum w/PurePlus, is a Group III oil.

Pennzoil said:
PurePlus™ Base Oil is classified as an API Group III product. It is important to note there is no such category as an API Group III+ base oil, interested readers can download and check out a copy of API 1509 for the current official base oil definitions. PurePlus Base Oil is classified as API Group III base oil based on its molecular structure, but it exceeds the minimum requirements for API Group III base oil.
