Why would anyone sell the original parts off their car??

Would you buy a 2013/2014 Shelby that did not come with its original parts?

I just don't get it. I see ads almost daily on here, other forums, and especially on Ebay for the sale of original parts (typically wheels, exhaust, or superchargers) taken off of a 2013/2014 Shelby GT500 (or any Mustang for that matter) and I can't believe it! Why would anyone in their right mind sell their original parts they removed off their car? Doing so will definitely will not help with your resale/trade-in values! And everyone knows you generally get a lot more for your car, and mod parts, if you return the car to stock and then sell the parts seperately. I know I'm probably in the minority and being overcautious, but at 200 miles I took off the original wheels and tires (because I did not care for them) and put them safely away in storage and then I also swapped out the original floor mats, windshield wipers, oil filter, and air filter. I cleaned up everything and sealed them in bags for safe keeping.

Now it's one thing to part out a totaled vehicle. But IMO if the reason you are selling your original parts is to pay for any mods you probably shouldn't be modding your car in the first place due to probably having a lack of savings.

I'd like to hear others thoughts on this. Also would like to know how many would or would not buy a car (especially a 2013/2014 Shelby GT500) that did not still have the original exhaust, wheels, supercharger, etc.

Previous owner of my Terminator was the original owner and had all of the original take off parts. It was important to me - indicated a level of care for the car. Just like the fact that he had full documentation for all modifications. I now have everything but the orig wheels and tires, he kept those as part of our deal. Only tha ing I can't understand you keeping is the original oil filter, that's a little OCD to me...

I agree 100%!! And wheels/tires are an easy replacement if ever desired. Check out my poll and vote! Yeah, your probably right about the oil filter! LOL!!

Btw...I grew up in KY and will be up in Lexington for Thanksgiving.

When I bought my 03 Cobra I looked for one that hadn't been messed with too much because it seems everybody will let any yahhoo "tune" their car. I bought the car with 1,800 miles on her in 2006 from a GM dealership in Florence Ky(guy traded it for a new vette). It was a 1 owner car originally from champagne Il ordered and bought from Anderson Ford(still has the business cards and window sticker). It was 99% stock with the only mods being a Diablo sport Predator(tune by Anderson Ford Motorsport) and some goofy taped on "billet look" stickers on the interior. The wife and I took it for a test drive and decided to trade in our True blue 02 lightning on it. On the way home my wife's job was to peel off the goofy stickers. We drove it around town that night and the next day I changed the brake rotors to the 2piece eradi-speed plus, full exhaust and wheels while ordering a pulley, plugs, and scheduling a dyno tune with Ken Bjonnes back when he operated Modular Depot. I fried the clutch drag racing at 12k miles and swapped in flywheel and a Kenne bell. Right now the only thing I have from stock is the rotor and that's because no one has wanted to buy them.

My mother gives me hard time about modifying all of my cars. I used to give them a hard time for selling their 60s vette and nova because gas prices were so high at 25 cents a gallon. So I guess it's a hindsights always 20/20 thing. I'm old enough to know better but still young enough not to care.

Would I buy a modified car that is missing original items? Absolutely! *but...they would have to be things I was already going to do and be tuned by someone I trust. I already have a limited space so the stock items would just take up more room. Does having the stock items help on resale? I'd say yes but not really a deal breaker for many who will be buying them 2nd/3rd hand most of the time. Who knows in 40-50 years a completely stock unmolested car could be worth some coin but I don't buy cars as investments or to make finiacial sense as buying cars really is the exact opposite of what a financial advisor would tell you to do. I have my Roth IRAs, 401k, Mutual funds and 529s for that making money and being finiacially stable. I buy my cars as toys to enjoy here and now.

The 11th commandment "thou shall not leave thy Mustang stock" besides anyone can own one....it takes a real man to cut one up ;-).

I do not get excited about stock cars. Start modifying them and then I become interested. I can walk by a hemi cuda' and not really care when it's an original car. Now I walk by the "War Fish" or other highly modified cars and it gets my blood pumping. But it's just me and my personality. It's different for everyone.

Wipers and filters, seriously?

I take it you have never tried to find takeoff parts for collector cars. Try to find an original starter shield, air cleaner filter or exhaust manifolds for a 70 Hemicuda. I don't know if the assembly line parts are different from the over the counter parts for Ford, but I do know they are for early Mopars.

Yeah, that may be a little OCD.

I had 2 2008 GT500 red stripe package verts, and sold one. I did return it to stock, and you are right, I did get more selling parts separately. In fact, I sold my car to a dealer, so the red stripe floor mats? Yup- kept them and sold them for 500.00, original car cover? Yup, got two now.

There were other parts like the tire repair kit, and anything not bolted down I kept. The dealer didnt give a crap, I saved money using it as a trade in, sold off extra parts, so ended up getting about 44k on a well used 17k miles gt500. Not a bad day for me.

But, lighten up a little on the original stuff. As well as I did, it took me probably a week of my time to get it done, and I value my time. I won't do it again unless Im broke and business-less

I guess Im not like you guys Snoop. I really don't care if it is 100% original, and if I had a 70 Cuda, I'd drive the crap out of it, and if somebody asked if it was all original, I'd remind them I was born a couple years later, and even I have some non original parts on me. Shit happens. Im still me and the Cuda is still a Cuda, yes?

I saved the original air from the tires and the original engine oil. They are stored safely away. Unfortunately I had to use the original gas to get home so I could not save that.

Snoop is right. Tail Light louvers for a 66 GTO are pretty pricey these days... An original Rochester 4 barrel, spare tire, jack, walnut steering wheel, ralley 1s and 2s...often these parts went to the junk yard.

Excellent thoughts you all. I especially liked F8L SN8K's post, and dubbsfaris too. And I knew Snoop would get me!

I ordered my car exactly how I wanted and kept every document that came from that process, as well as the stickers and other shipping documents. Maybe I am crazy, but hopefully one day someone will appreciate my attention to detail. ;-)

Keeping the parts gives you the option of selling it modded or returning it back to stock, based on the collector market @ the time.....
I have all the parts off my 11 except the injectors & the intercooler, & will do the same with the 14.

The only things I haven't kept are my stock wheels and blower. Easy enough to get if you want to return to stock and the money I got for them were a nice offset on the price of the new wheels and blower.

Because we aren't worried about resale... I've had mine almost a year and over 12k miles, it's not going to be a collector car, it's going to be a daily driver / race car / show car / grocery getter / pure enjoyment car :burnout:

I'm selling my original parts that I am sure are not going back on, because I have the car the way I want it. And yes, selling the parts helps afford mods, doesn't mean I am being irresponsible or am going to have the car repo'd... But why let thousands of dollars worth of parts lay around tying up money and garage space when they will never again be used?

This.

1. No space for extra sets of wheels, seats, blower, etc
2. By the time I'm done with a car, it's not going to be even close to stock, so putting it back to stock would be more of a pain than it's worth.
3. If I put 50-60k miles on a car in the first few years, I doubt it'll make the long haul to become a collector car.

Because not everyone sees it as a long term "investment."

Very true, but everyone who plans to sell and move along to something else is at least somewhat concerned with resale or trade values. Right? And while they may not think the car is going up in value, it will definitely bring more value period with its original parts...unless the right buyer comes along looking for that exact car (talking major mods here).

Unless you're trading in the car. The mods don't hurt the value. If you're selling the car, modded, you'll lose the mod money.

Have the stock parts doesn't make it more marketable, doesn't make it worth more, people won't pay more for it. There's a very very very small faction of car buyers that view the car as you do.

It's not about viewing the car as a collectible or not. While I agree very few would care about having the original wiper blades/filters/etc. just a quick look at the poll above clearly shows 50% desire a 13/14 Shelby with its original parts. Now only 35 or so have voted, so we will have to see how it plays out, but 50% is not a small faction if this level holds through.

And I bet another poll asking who would pay more will show close to 50% as well! It may not matter on a Ford Taurus, Fusion, or Focus nearly as much, but it will definitely matter more on something like a Shelby, a Boss, Vette, etc. You probably know this better than anyone, but different cars appeal to different markets. And the more a car costs the more its buyer market will expect from it care and maintance wise.
