Although I had pretty much stopped driving my 2013 Shelby GT500 for the season, I'm dusting it off for a big drive tomorrow. So it just so happened that my folks are in town this weekend (they live several hours away) and I have been wanting to take my Father on a nice scenic cruise or roadtrip the past year I've owned the car. I just remembered tonight that some local Mustang clubs are doing a 225 mile cruise tomorrow and he said he'd love to go (after Mom said it was fine). We'll take turns driving and there will be some great photo ops.

Some of you all may remember that one of the main reasons I got the car was my Dad also owned a Shelby GT500, 1967 model, while he was growing up and he had to sell the car when I was very young to take care of his family of five. I ordered and purchased mine last year and completely surprised him with it at the delivery (30 years after he sold his Shelby in 1982). It was one of the best days of my life, and his! Although the car is my responsiblity I also put his name on the title with mine. Although he has ridden in and drove the car a couple of times, we've never had a chance to go on a good scenic cruise. This will be a childhood dream come true for me tomorrow and it will be hard to get some sleep tonight.

Wish us safe driving and no tire blowouts!

Enjoy your time with your dad and make some memories. I wish my mom was still here so I could take her for a ride., I lost her in January of this year.

If the cruise goes south toward B'ham, check out the cars at Fultondale shopping center. There are usually several hundred cars, all makes and models. I hope Ala has the game in hand by the time we leave to go there. I really envy you taking your dad for that trip. My Dad rode old Harleys before he got married. Back in the seventies, I let him drive my Honda 750 home from work. He loved it. I know you and your dad will have a great time.

yeh, lots of us remember when you originally did the post about that. it's one of the great things about Mustangs; for those old enough to have been around back then, to see the car not only still going strong, but actually to have continued to improve far beyond what anybody back then would have ever dreamed was possible to be able to get in a Mustang coming straight out of the factory. and the car's heritage is interwoven with the heritage of families and friends and time spent together over the span of almost 5 full decades now. it's truly an important piece of Americana.

very happy to see this finally happening for you. enjoy!

Be safe and make some memories. Awesome that you and your pops are both into cars. Just what a father and son should be doing.

Please post some pics with your dad!! My dad has Alzheimers and let me tell you how much it hurts knowing that he has no memories of us growing up. I truly cherish the smallest memories I have of him and with him.

Enjoy your time with him on the cruise as you will never forget the smiles and laughter!!

Cheers!!

Thanks for all of the kind comments and well wishes everyone! Sorry for the delay; I spent the weekend entertaining my folks and yesterday when I finally got back on the boards I didn't see my thread I posted and therefore didn't think of it! I was very presently surprised how many responded back about how special it would also be to be able to do a nice long cruise with their own Father.

Our cruise, although pretty chilly at first, was an absolute blast! I picked up my Father around 6:30 AM and in 30 degree weather and made about a 45 minute drive to meet up with the two Mustang clubs. Although I'm not a member of either one, the Rocket City Mustang Club and Limestone County Mustang Club welcomed us like we were old members. These are some great Guys and Gals and I look forward to doing events with both of them. My 63 year old Dad made some new friends, as did I.

I knew several of the Shelby owners that were present. In total we had 20 cars, with folks either joining us or dropping off throughout the cruise. There were 5 or 6 Shelbys, and we actually had 3, 2013 Shelbys, including mine. What was super cool was that we had all three styles of the 2013 Shelby present which is not very easy to do; there was 1 Coupe with the metal roof (1 of 3,434), 1 Convertible (1 of 808) and my Coupe with the glass roof (1 of 643). We got a couple pics of all three and I will try to post them up later this evening! There was also a 2008 Roush 427R, a late model Saleen Mustang (seeing the Roush and Saleen driving side by side was also very cool for the Highschool kid in me!) a couple 1966 Mustangs and a unmolested all originial 1998 SVT Cobra with about 80K miles on it. There were NO Fox Bodied or SN95 Mustangs present and that blew my mind! My Father loved seeing the 5 or 6 Shelbys parked along side each other as well as the Saleen model and of course the 1966 Models. He kept taking pictures of all of the cars.

Our cruise went up the interestate for a while and then we cut over through the very Southern part of TN and eventually went up several miles of the Natchez Trace making several stops along the way for pics, etc. Dad had never been on any type of car cruise before so this was not only a special time for us, but cool to see his expressions of having a half mile long procession of just Ford Mustangs. I of course had him drive a lot of the cruise after we had met up with everyone. Although it took a little time he was banging some gears after a few miles. The lead car maintained the speed limit so us cars in the back played a little here and there or occasionally swaped positions.

Near the end of the cruise we all met up one last time for a great lunch at Pucket's in Leiper's Fork. Dad was telling everyone who would listen about his 1967 Shelby GT500 and how much better my new one is. The two primary things that stand out on the new 2013 Shelby GT500 over his old one he said was the excellent seats and the amazing power.

On the way home after leaving lunch, I had two Shelby GT500s, the Roush, and a 4.6L Mustang GT follow me on the back roads to the interstate. We did about 10 miles or so of some awesome twisty backroads which were probably even more beautiful and fun to drive than the Natchez Trace. Finally, Dad and I got to mess around with a friend's 2011 Shelby GT500 that has all of the bolt on mods including LTs, offroad X, Borla Ataks, Tune, CAI, Pulley and TB. Even with my 250lb Father in the car (the other guy only had his 120lb wife in his), we were pretty much dead even until the higher speeds when my better gearing started giving me the advantage. Dad loved seeing what the Shelby could do!

I will try to post up some pics tonight as I have a chance guys, as well as the link to my previous post I put up last year when I ordered the car Tom. Dad and I had a wonderful time and he kept thanking me for taking him on the cruise. He said he had a lot to tell his work buddies (he is an Union Electrician) and that they were never going to believe what all we did and would be jealous as hell. LOL!
