I picked up my CJ manifold this morning from Mike (86merc) and had a few talks with how poor the final product casting looked. At that point and checking it out more, i decided to make this thread for pre and aft pics of when i clean up the runner outlets and smooth the valley at the intake mouth. I'll keep the thread updated with pics and like my last ported manifold thread will also provide dyno runs very soon. I may even have the chance to compare to a stock unit as mike also picked one up which be an awesome comparison. we will be doing a big manifold test once again coming up between a stock mani to boss to CJ to cleaned up CJ on his car this time to keep numbers consistent from gains. We also will have a few different FRPP throttle bodies to test. For now i just wanted to make a thread for before and after reworking purpose.

Started at the T body entrance by smoothing down any heavy cast lines.

One thing that i just caught as i was removing the runner gaskets is that there was a pretty good size casting lip that went above the actual manifold sealing surface. Would this of caused a problem with a vacuum leak from less pressure on the gasket, not likely, but didn't want to keep the manifold from sitting as flat as possible to the head. Took it off with a flat file across the runner flange and took off any debris left with some sand paper.

Filled the opening void after sanding/scuffing the surface with motorcraft silicone. I choose it because it does flex slightly but is super strong and will not degrade from temps or oil/fuel contamination.

Cleaned up all the port opening as some of the casting look to of gotten shifted upon process. It created wall sides at the head flange with sharp walls that didnt line up. Also smoothed down the fuel injector housing with a lot less blend area.

This is the reason why it was recalled. They had problems with the parting lines separating or something. It would be interesting to compare this casting to the new one, but they keep pushing back the ship date. It is not at the 16th of this month...

I would love to see one of the prototypes. They looked great on the outside. Wonder what the ports and throttle opening looked like.

btw, These have an engraved number on the under side of the runners. I would assume they are some type of production numbers to track them. It will be interesting to see if later numbers start to have better quality.

The pre production unit definitely looked nice. Makes me want to spray mine gloss black lol. I think these must of been rushed to get them out which is why they look rough everywhere around the manifold. Either way more more concerned with how well it works for the street and track. Can't wait to get out.

Tuned I for this one, I almost pulled the trigger on this today, but I'm waiting till ford racing comes out with the cai at the end of the month so I don't pay an arm and a leg for a custom fabricated one.. Bought my gt 500 tb today, so getting the ball rolling

I'll be making up a CAI for me and mike since i do that kind of stuff very often which helps. Making one really shouldn't cost more than a JLT or FRPP once released. Figure ill probably have $150 in parts using nice aluminum piping, slot maf flange, Amsoil filter, clamps, coupler, and about $100 in labor of fab and welding time. Also just got in my FRPP T body today

*Also added more pics with comments of some progress

I have no problem making them for guys if needed. Just got the order placed for all the parts, should be in next week as the air filters are coming direct from cali. I wanted a very high quality filter, dry with excellent flow while having a great filtering ability. Also wanted one that had an internal velocity stack to help straighten the air flow before entering the maf areas from going around a Sharp corner found on most filters. It's made by Amsoil for a different company around their specs. Should come out really nice and pics of that by next week pending part arrival.
