How much HP can the 2014 Mustang 5.0 take?

Hey there, I am having a hard time making a decision between getting a 2014 Shelby or a 2014 GT. If I got the GT I would put twin turbos and cams on the car, I would like to accomplish around 800rwhp.

Here is my question: How much HP can a factory 5.0 take? Including the block, tranny and rear end. Any advice or information that you may would know help a bunch. Thanks for everyone's knowledge in advance.

Look forward to finding this information out.

I would definitely go with the GT500. The mt82 won't last long. The auto would handle it.

I believe the coyote blocks are rated for about 650rwhp

I'm running 654/600 on the stock block. Have been for about 2 months. I would go for the GT500 though cause the stock GT block probably won't take much more without letting go. I've also read that a lot of the blown motors lately are due to bad gas.

What he said about 650rwhp seems to b about the reliable limit on stock internals.

I read alot about the mt82....to b honest ever since i put my supercharger on it seems to shift like butter :??:...

If your considering a '14 gt500 ... A tune and pulley your already at 700rwhp. I would pick the gt500 if money wasn't an issue for sure. But they r also quite a bit heavier

A Shelby will retain value much better, but if your into customizing and modding, I'd say gt. as for the block, most people say 650ish, from what I have read and knowledge that has been shared with me is the block will hold as long as your tune is good and air/fuel is critical. My car is about 760hp, it dynod at 784, however it began to run lean at higher rpms so rev limiter was set before the point it started showing lean. I've been on this power for about a month and have over 1000 miles and no issues. How long will it last? We will find out

Everyone bitches about the mt-82 and it's honestly not that bad. It's been great to me at 600rwhp and most people that say its bad don't even have one. People also say 650rwhp is the max limit... Maybe In the past when people had less miles but I keep seeing more and more threads about blowing motors with less than 650.

No, it's just ALOT of people have had issues with them.

I personally love the transmission. I love the gearing, I think it's stupid easy to shift. But there made with cheap Chinese parts. Once mine goes, and I know it will, I'll be getting a full rebuild kit on it to support big power.

I think the mt82 is the best geared manual transmission out there.

I was considering a GT500 as well.

But I pay cash for everything and I wanted as much money as possible for mods! That's why I picked the GT. I knew whatever I got would NOT remain stock.

Also, anything more than 600RWHP on the street seems like a little much. I also like the fact some people think it's "just a GT'. Meanwhile, I'm running 12.40's on street tires:burnout:! lol

12.40 is quick, but my stock GT with 3.73's (I assume running somewhere around 12.6-13.0) just got walked the other day by a modded Subaru wrx!

I will be adding a power adder in the near future.

To the OP, I agree with others, the GT500 will hold it's value better if that is a concern, plus it has the cache of being a GT500. I personally would rather have the twin turbo sleeper.

If you can afford a 13+ GT500, why even talk about the 5.0?
I'm not heavily modded but the MT-82 has been great to me. There have been legitimate defects for sure but I'd be will to bet many issues have been due to driver error/abuse.

The Shelby is your best option. That said, I am making 711rwhp through a MT82 on a Lund tune with the little Vortech blower.

Perhaps I am an anomaly, but no issues so far.

669/581 TVS and AED tune through a MT82. No issues whatsoever. If i could swing the Shelby I would, but not having a payment for my mustang is pretty effing bueno!

Funny you should ask this.....

Some people have already been down the "GT500" road. Even though the 2013/14 GT500 is the best ever built, they still have handicaps. The GT500 is "heavy" to say the least, very nose heavy. They are not great at dig racing, and are forced to make big power to compensate for the added weight. To race cars that are lighter, you better have 80-100 rwhp advantage, or you are toast. Trust me, I've raced many modded S197 GT's with my GT500 that were much lower on power. Even though I won, it was due to the power advantage, while the GT was right there scratching at my back.

This time, it's a lighter engine that has already been proven to win in the horsepower vs. weight war. The Coyote is a champion that isn't living in the shadow of the older (larger brother), the Condor and Trinity. A built/forced induction Coyote is lighter and just as powerful as the GT500 (Condor/Trinity) brother. When it comes to car meets, people quickly glance at the common GT500, while rushing to drool over a twin turbo Coyote.

Wouldnt even waste your money on a 5.0 for the power you want. Get the 500. For the 5.0 you would have tp build everything to make it last.

Get a 2014 GT500 and pull the blower off and TT that. Make 900whp on stock motor. Done.

 My thoughts exactly...

For the cost of the 500, you can have a forged short block a blower/turbo with a carbon fiber driveshaft and a bullet proof auto cheaper than a base 500. You can grab a 5.0 for under 30k. People on this site have done it... The OP isn't stupid for going either route as each has its pros and cons.
The GT500 is a badass turnkey almost supercar with awesome heritage. The 5.0 is a potent factory car that can be upgraded to extreme hp numbers and is a total bargain under 30k. However, you have to be patient with the modding as we all know modding a car is a task that can have its gremlins... Once the coyote is forged however, it's all a matter of preference if you're modding either one. Just my .02.

GT500's need big power, and can make it easily, to make up for their weight issue. However, with the big power, they have a hard time putting that power down on the pavement.

Shitty situation, to say the least.
