Just got my shorblock installed that I had built by BBR and shipped to me over here in Germany. BBR recommended this cooling mod since I have a blower setup. Literally took me no time at all to install. And once I got this installed I noticed that my ECT's have dropped a noticeable amount from my Aeroforce gauge by almost 10 degrees in traffic and noticed on my instrument cluster as well that it's cooler. This a great way to keep the engine cooler for less detonation and I would recommend this for any new Coyote 5.0's for some good insurance for your investment. Thanks BBR and MMR.


We have installed this a couple cars in the last couple weeks and sent some over to our boys stationed over-seas. What we have noticed is that the cars ECT's have stayed cooler. Now we have not done any serious testing because the motors that they went in were all new built ones going through seating of the rings but we are looking forward too see the final result. So far, we trust this product very much and if your swapping out the motor, we deff recommend this mod!!

As stated above this can be done in the car with the intake removed. I used a chisel and a small pair of channel locks and had it done easily. Thanks again MMR for a quality product.

I don't see this being done with the motor in the car, if it indeed will help with the issue, it'd be worth it

i dont think you will be able to install this while the engine is in the car either. Look at the mounting points and look at how much room you have behind the engine to the firewall.

He described tapping out the freeze plugs. I'm pretty sure you can't do that unless the heads are off the block.

you can do them while the heads are on the block. The freeze plugs are just on the back of the head, uncovered/out in the open. At least i think they are.

Didn't LMS engine find that the heating issues are not the #8 but the center cylinders because of block design?

After just having a couple Coyote powertrains out, I wonder if this couldn't be done by lowering the entire cradle but leaving the trans crossmember bolted up. That might give enough room to knock the freeze plugs out.

Basically the same as the 03-04 Cobra. I was able to do the head cooling mod with that motor still in the car. Interested to see if this is the same way.

I'm curious as well to hear if there was any testing done on this to prove it out. I had the parts in hand to do this on my Cobra but could never get motivated to put it on due to the installation hassle and lack of concrete evidence I needed it.

Hopefully MMR can chime in here and answer some of these questions on installation and cooling benefits. It looks like a very profitable item for them if the data supports the claims.

So improper cooling is causing the #8 to pop? It would be interesting to see MMR's explanation on why the #8's were popping. I thought it was early tunes causing the issue? You also have the isolated issues where guys are "claiming" their # 8 popped with a completely stock engine.

The Install can be completed in the car, like many modifications such as headers etc it is tight but can be done. A local customer just did the install and said he removed the intake manifold and used a curved pry bar between the firewall and the freeze plug, once the freeze plug turned sideways he was able to grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out, he explained it as being pretty easy with the manifold being off.

In regards to testing. We have been using this product for quite some time on our new racecar engines that we have been testing. It is is interesting to not that ford built the same exact thing into the front of the block ( a passage to balance coolant flow from side to side), the problem is the water is fed to the engine from the front, by the time it reaches the rear cylinders it is at its highest temperature. This product simply balances the flow and promotes flow at the rear cylinders.

We initially noted the problem when our test engine had higher EGT's in the # 8 cylinder than all of the others. The reason for this is as coolant temp rises, evaporation of fuel in the cylinder head intake port and in the chamber (prior to being ignited) is higher, this makes the cylinder run more lean than the others increasing the chance for detonation/pinging.

Lastly, the picture below shows the large water jacket (just below the intake ports) surrounding the intake port on cylinder # 5, 6 and 7, note that cylinder # 8 (far left) does not have it, another reason for the higher coolant temp on cylinder # 8

For those considering having the engine out of the car or a clutch job done this is a no brainer, the install in this case is takes just a few minutes and this is cheap insurance to protect your engine (new or old)
