I am thinking of either doing the Hellion turbo kit or the Whipple 2.9 kit on my 2011 GT500. I can't choose between these two. My goal is to have both power, reliability and efficiency. I'm looking for advice from people who have done one of the two on their car and what the results were? So advice on the pros and cons of either way would be appreciated. I'm looking to go between 700-750 WHP.

If you have the $$$ then do the Hellion TT kit

I've been dreaming of going TT ever since watching this video of a TT C6 beating a 4.0L FGT pretty bad. Here's the vid.

Im not familiar with the turbo kit in particular, but if Im not mistaken its the one where the turbos are mounted real low by the trans?
As much as I am a turbo fan, Im not a big fan of having to use a pump on the oil drains due to the Turbos being so low. On top of which it sounds like it would be difficult to both work on and/or upgrade.

Its not like it used to be where Turbos were the obvious winner due to being capable of so much higher efficiency (compared to 2 lobe roots blowers). These whipples are so efficient and with the extremely good exhaust scavenging you get that you dont get with a turbo makes them really capable.

Im honestly torn.
Its really comes down to what youre going to use it for, and to some extent simplicity/reliability.
If I were building a drag car or a weekend warrior street car, I would go turbo. If I were building a road race car or a daily driver, Id go S/C.

just my $.02

They are about the same price. The hellion will cost 1k more to install then the supercharger. Here is a quote i got from hellion

Hellion GT500 twin turbo system.....................$5995
80# fuel injectors.................................................+400
AEM wideband O2 sensor and air/fuel
ration gauge.........................................................+220
TurboSmart eBoost street electronic
boost controller.....................................................+315
Extra solenoid for boost controller
(required for twin turbo applications)..................+108
Installation and dynotuning.................................+1800
Total......................................................................$8838

That's what makes me think twice abt the turbo kit.

That pump probably has a better track record then our factory oil pump. I think there is a built in fail safe/ warning light if you loose pressure with the Hellion kit.

Is that blowing thru the stock Eaton. I priced it out and with an intercooler and intake it was well over $10k. I bought a 2.8 KB instead.

I had the same dilemma. I went whipple 2.9 and for me it was the correct choice. Here are my reason.

1. Simple up grade to a Whipple. It can be done in a few hours in one day.

2, Reliable

3. Does not add to the complication of the car. No two extra turbos no oil pumps no air intakes very low to the ground to suck up water like it did to Sargent.

4. Both the Whipple and the Hellion can make as much hp as a stock block can reliably take.

5. Both can easily make in the 700-750 range.

6. The 2.9 is emissions legal. I have a legal Dallas Texas inspection on my car. The Hellion eliminates the cats.

7. No clearance to the ground issues with a 2.9

I will say that the Hellion kit does have the potential to make more horsepower IF you are going to build the engine. I did not want to go that far.

The 2.9 is a ton of fun to drive.

Thanks, You made some great points. I am leaning toward the whipple right now.

1. Simple up grade to a Whipple. It can be done in a few hours in one day. True but you have to buy a new pulley ever time you want more boost, turbo just turn it up

2, ReliableSo is the turbo, ask Tony (thebull) 1100rwhp and drives like stock

3. Does not add to the complication of the car. No two extra turbos no oil pumps no air intakes very low to the ground to suck up water like it did to Sargent.True also but dont drive it threw water, not a boat lol

4. Both the Whipple and the Hellion can make as much hp as a stock block can reliably take.

5. Both can easily make in the 700-750 range.Kinda but youll put more strain on the motor and motor chance of belt slippage

6. The 2.9 is emissions legal. I have a legal Dallas Texas inspection on my car. The Hellion eliminates the cats.

7. No clearance to the ground issues with a 2.9 The whole entire kit is NO lower then the exhaust

I will say that the Hellion kit does have the potential to make more horsepower IF you are going to build the engine. I did not want to go that far.

The 2.9 is a ton of fun to drive.
So is the turbo, plus you can get the sleeper effect cause you wont hear the turbos untill your under boost unlike the whipple which you hear more of the whine

I don't hear a whine from mine until I go into boost. I think most that have the Shelby love the whine. There were threads on how to get the whine louder. If you take your time with the whipple like any SC you will never know its up there. When it's time to go to work I think you want to hear it to let you know its there lol.

I'm currently building my motor now for the Shelby and I was going to go the TT route. Now I'm going to do what my brother did and just go 4.0 Whipple. I did the 2.9 for ease of installation and quickly going over 700rwhp. I think if you want a daily driver without any issues the SC is the easiest way. From the numbers I have been seeing ( can't vouch for them) the TVS is also one to watch out for from VMP he's at the 800 mark

What's wrong with the Kenne Bell 2.8? I love mine! With race pulley and tune the car can make 800+whp!! Do some internals and you can run that all day!

I think the kit is great and I have put it to the test as you all know.

I think a blower upgrade is great too. It's all personal preference.

Although you are limited to power with the blower.
The turbos are easier on the engine and take far less power to operate.

I'm pretty sure that if back to back passes were made with equal power the turbo car would be better due to lack of heat soak....The bigger aftermarket blowers create incredible heat.

For ease of install blower all the way.

For something different and giving people a total suprise turbo all the way.

My car sounds stock unless I have the exhaust open.

Good luck and I'm sure you will enjoy whatever path you take!!!
